Mild steel, also referred to as "low carbon steel," is a variant of carbon steel that contains a relatively low percentage of carbon. It usually falls within the range of 0.05% to 0.25% carbon content by weight. In comparison, high carbon steels typically possess a carbon content ranging from 0.30% to 2.0%. If the carbon content exceeds this range, the steel would be categorized as cast iron.
